Functional soft materials are the basis of numerous modern technologies, including soft robotics, flexible electronics, energy materials, tissue engineering scaffolds, and biomedical devices. The mechanical properties of soft materials play pivotal roles in their practical applications; yet it remains challenging to rationally design and control their mechanical properties. Our lab is devoted to building a better understanding on the design principles of naturally occurring materials with outstanding mechanical properties and to engineering synthetic soft materials with similar or even superior mechanical properties. We combine single molecule force spectroscopy with synthetic biology and polymer chemistry to address fundamental questions as well as applied challenges in this interdisciplinary field.
